A.K: Who are you? Tell us what you think is most important for people to know about you at the moment..
J.L: Well, this is always the hard part. At the moment, the most important thing for people to know about me is that I'm a young, independent, Canadian fashion designer.
A.K: Why fashion? When did you start?
J.L: I started sewing and making clothes when I was 13, and fell into fashion later, though it was always my plan to be an artist.
A.K: What is your last collection and why?
J.L: My last collection was informed by a visit to the National History museum in New York. I was taken with the mineral samples, their odd colour combinations and textures, both organic and inorganic. My research led me to microscopic images of minerals under polarized light, which became a custom digital print and inspired the colour palette. Construction evolved along the repetitive geometries and crystalline forms of minerals.
A.K: What are you doing next?
J.L: Spending more time outside, now that the Canadian winter has passed, and riding my bike again. As far as work, I'm returning to the form, draping a lot and playing with fabric. I'm approaching my next collection very loosely. We're thinking about doing sales in Paris next season, as well as New York where we've been showing for a few seasons, so we're figuring that out. Also, I'd really like to find a street-level studio, and open a shop/gallery in the front, so I'm keeping my eye open for space.
A.K: Heroes -- who/why?
J.L: Dunno really. Belles Laides and Bas Bleus?
